My main field tech is out for two days. This lead to me having to go out on a support call for the first time in about four years. One thing I do not miss about field calls is driving on 695 during the day. Holy crap I hate that fucking road. I was lucky enough to get out of the property by 4pm so I had a chance to get back to Hunt Valley and miss a majority of the rush hour. We were heading along at a pretty good clip (about 60mph and thats damn good for 695) when I noticed a few cars in front me hit their brakes and then switch over in other lanes. I wasn’t lucky enough to be able to switch lanes.
With fast moving traffic on my left and right I got stuck behind a minivan. A minivan going 40 mph. A minivan going 40 mph driven by a woman. A minivan going 40 mph driven by a woman with blonde hair. A minivan going 40 mph driven by a woman with blonde hair who was happily YAPPING AWAY ON HER GODDAMN CELL PHONE oblivous to the world around her and the traffic logjam she was causing. Idiot.
What annoyed me most about the whole trip was the fact that I didn’t need to go on the call in the first place. The property insisted it was critical because they wouldn’t be able to close out and do the night audit without the system. When I got there, I saw that they had two comptuers sitting on the desk. ‘You can’t do the audit with that other system?’ ‘Well yeah, but they prefer to use this one’. Bah! So after digging under the counter to remove the dirtiest, nastiest, mucked up computer you’ve ever seen (covering my tie and white dress shirt with black dusk and dirt) I find its nothing more than a lose wire behind the power switch. That was a nice waste of an afternoon.
