Bush believes Social Security is heading for a major problem and needs to be reformed. Democrats, and several Republicans, have rejected this claiming that there is no problem with Social Security and Bush is just manufacturing a ‘crisis’. Everythings fine and nothing needs to be changed.

I’ve got a simple question. I’ve asked it a few times before and have yet to get an answer. My question is this:

What’s changed?

In 1998 Bill Clinton, during his State of the Union Address, said the following “What should we do with this projected surplus? I have a simple four-word answer: Save Social Security first.”

During the 2000 Debates between Bush and Gore, Gore chastised Bush for not paying close attention to Social Security’s problems. Don’t forget the need for a ‘lockbox’.

What’s changed (aside from the fact there’s a Replublican President)? Save Social Security? How could it need saving if there is no problem? Why does the problem Clinton/Gore saw not exist now? Did they (Clinton/Gore) fix it? If so, what did they do?

Why did Social Security need saving in 1998 but is perfectly fine today?
