I think I’m finally starting to recover from this past weekend. I’m not quite as sore from climbing up the sledding hell again and again and again and (you get the point….) and I’m no longer walking with a limp. As I said before, this past weekend was a complete blast. I could have used a bit more snow but the drifts Sunday more than made up for it.

Sunday was definitely the best day. We loaded up the kids both days and hit the hill in front of Southern Regional Middle School for some sledding. It was fun Saturday, but the snow was well packed on Sunday which meant everyone went further and faster than the day before. I can’t really decide what was more fun; the actual sledding or the ride to get there and back. It was pretty windy Sunday. That mixed with a powdery snow made for some pretty interesting snow drifts. Especially on the back roads through empty corn fields. The PA road crews annouced they were staying off most of the back roads until the winds died down. They’d plow a road and less than a hour later the wind will have covered it up again. Many times you couldn’t even make out where the actual road was because of the drifting snow. You’d have to rely on memory and just try and stay between any stands of trees and the occasional road sign. And of course I got just a bit of a kick from plowing through drifts that were almost as high as the hood of the jeep (with the kids screaming in the back with each one (a happy kind of screaming, not a ‘Dad’s gone nuts!’ kind of screaming)).

I had a small bit of drama towards the end of the trip when the youngest went down riding the saucer (which ended up being the fastest sled). For some reason, the sled started to turn and headed right for a jump the older kids on the hill had built. Before I knew it she was airborne (not THAT high though it sure as hell seemed like it at the time) and then crashing in a explosion of snow. I’m at the top of the hill and I can hear her screaming so I go running down the hill (did I mention that this is a BIG, steep hill?) with thoughts of an emergency room visit on the brain. When I get down to her, I realize she’s not screaming, she’s laying on her back just laughing her ass off because she just had her best ride of the day. Turns out the only actual injury that day was my ankle which I twisted running down the hill to get to laughing girl.
