The baseball league my boy plays in uses a few different fields in the Southern York County area. One of those fields is on a piece of land owned by a local manufacturing business. Its a couple acres located next to the business that wasn’t being used. Many years ago the owner took the unused land and, at his own expense, put a baseball field on it and donated its use the the league.
This year, someone who is ‘scooter bound’ complained that the fencing on the field does not comply to ADA requirements. They can’t scooter themselves out on the field (the fencing has some tight turns designed to protect players on the bench from foul balls and such). Its not like they can’t get to the field. There’s full access. They just can’t navigate their scooter onto the field. They’re not part of any teams coaching staff so I’m not really clear why they need access to the field to begin with.
So, They’ve complained and now the government has stepped in. Even though the league and field is privately funded, because one person has complained, the goverment has mandated the field be brought into compliance with ADA regs. Can you see where I’m going with this?
The league received notice from the owner that he cannot afford the several thousand dollars it would require to rework the fencing for the field and that it was going to be torn down. Now the kids have one less field to play ball on and there is a scramble to re-work this seasons schedule to fit on the fields they have left.

How typical. Now don’t get me wrong, I do feel for the disabled, but if the disabled person has no business being on the field (I have yet to see someone play ball from a scooter or wheelchair) then why is it a big deal? I hope this idiot realizes that he or she is the reason the field is being demolished…no doubt that person LOVES kids. Sheesh. Speaking of disabled people, I ran into a guy on a scooter just the other day at our little local grocery store. This guy was so rude and so into his disability. He wanted everyone to move out of his way so he could push through the aisles of the store. Must have been in a hurry. Couldn’t wait his turn like the rest of us shoppers. I complained to one of the checkout people (a girl I know) about how rude this guy is, and she said, “Yeah, pretty pathetic — what’s worse, is he’s disabled because he eats like a fricken pig.” So because this guy can’t stop stuffing his face, the rest of the world has to cater to him.
The tyranny of the minority (one loudmouth) strikes again. Oh say can you see…
